Poverty-induced financial anxiety creates constant mental worry that consumes worker attention and impairs performance on complex physical tasks. Restoring financial peace of mind frees up cognitive bandwidth, reducing workplace errors and improving work quality.

Participants

408 human male wage laborers (aged 18–55) in Odisha, India.

Study Design

Randomized evaluation tracking worker attentiveness through physical inspection of leaf plates (counting leaves per plate, stitch count, and undone/redone stitches) following early pay disbursement.

Results

Receiving early cash increased the probability of high workplace attentiveness by 7.7 percentage points overall (a 17.1% increase compared to the comparison group). Among workers with high preexisting financial strain, high attentiveness increased by 18.6 percentage points, while lower-strain workers showed no significant change.

Takeaway

Track worker error rates and quality metrics against pay schedule timing to identify attentiveness deficits caused by pre-payday financial worry.
