Financial Thought Priming
Low-income workers carry chronic background financial worries that can be easily brought top of mind by environmental triggers. When financial thoughts are primed, mental processing capacity is diverted away from active job execution, degrading cognitive focus.
Picture this
A driver navigating a narrow road gets distracted whenever a phone alarm rings. The alarm does not create new road hazards, but bringing attention to the alarm distracts the driver from steering safely.
What the evidence says
At baseline, 83 percent of workers reported actively thinking about finances while working, 70 percent were "very worried" about future finances, and 68 percent reported difficulty producing emergency cash of INR 1,000 ($15.43 USD). Experimental priming treatments successfully brought existing financial thoughts top of mind.
- Who
- 408 human male wage laborers (aged 18–55) across 47 villages in Odisha, India.
- How
- Experimental evaluation using survey priming treatments to activate latent financial thoughts and measure baseline financial anxiety during a 12-day manufacturing task.
What to do
Eliminate invasive financial inquiries and debt collection notices within active manufacturing environments to prevent bringing latent financial stress top of mind.
