Financial incentives frequently fail to optimize employee effort because money lacks emotional resonance and visibility among peers and family, missing an essential driver of human motivation: status and public recognition.

Participants

N = 256 loan officers who completed baseline and endline surveys across 61 branches in Colombia.

Study Design

Endline survey evaluation assessing participant perceptions of monthly color bulletins, public recognitions, and family-shared prize experiences.

Results

84% of participating loan officers appreciated sharing program recognition and prizes with friends and family, 74% valued public praise for their work, and 76% praised the monthly bulletin feature, driving a 63% positive perception of branch work environment despite internal competition.

Takeaway

Publish monthly performance bulletins and enable employees to share non-monetary achievements with peers and families to amplify motivation without inflating cash budgets.
