Student Perception Survey Standalone Predictive Validity

RCTClinical Trial

Determining whether student-reported perceptions of classroom environment and teaching practices can independently predict causal student academic achievement gains following random classroom assignment.

Picture this

Asking restaurant patrons directly about service quality provides a valid signal of overall kitchen quality, but individual customer survey ratings contain more natural variation than objective sales figures.

What the evidence says

Standalone Tripod student perception survey ratings predicted post-randomization student test achievement with an IV coefficient of 0.940 (p < 0.01, SE = 0.311). While causally valid, standalone survey ratings exhibited roughly double the estimation error of test-based value-added measures (SE = 0.149).

Who was studied
N = 24,415 randomized students in grades 4–8 across 619 randomization blocks in 6 urban public school districts.
How
LIML IV regression testing the standalone predictive validity of prior-year Tripod student perception survey scores on student state test achievement following random roster assignment.

What to do

Incorporate student perception surveys as a supporting component within a multi-measure evaluation composite rather than relying on surveys as a sole decision-making metric.

From the source

"However, because classroom observations and student perception surveys are much less strongly predictive of student achievement gains, the standard errors on these are considerably higher (roughly of .3 rather than .149 for the value-added measure)."
