Targeted Medical Expenditure Response

RCTClinical Trial

Soft labeling mechanisms generally fail to alter total household spending or general priority items, yet they may selectively stimulate expenditures in essential, high-urgency categories like health care among liquidity-constrained households.

Picture this

Imagine sending cash with a tag labeled "doctor bill"; while the family back home might ignore labels on routine grocery funds, a clear label on health care prompts them to immediately pay off backed-up medical bills or seek needed treatment when extra money arrives.

What the evidence says

In the low-baseline remittance subsample, access to labeling caused a statistically significant increase in log medical expenditures (+0.862 log points, p < 0.01), whereas total household expenditures showed no significant change (+0.088 log points, p > 0.10).

Who was studied
1,377 paired Filipino migrant workers in the UAE and recipient households in the Philippines.
How
OLS intent-to-treat regression measuring disaggregated 3-month log expenditure categories, split by baseline remittance levels.

What to do

Evaluate disaggregated expenditure categories alongside aggregate spending totals to capture targeted behavioral shifts in health and emergency care.

From the source

"In only one area, medical expenses, is there a positive impact on expenditures. This increase in medical expenditures in the below-median-remittances subsample mirrors the increase in remittances seen in this subsample, and so it is possible this reflects increased control on the part of migrants in this subsample."
