Insurance-Induced Crop Abandonment Prevention
RCTClinical Trial
When severe rainfall shortages occur early in the monsoon, risk-exposed smallholders often abandon crops prematurely or delay planting to prevent sinking further unrecoverable capital into failing fields.
Picture this
Think of a mountain climber caught in bad weather; if they carry a backup rescue beacon, they keep pushing forward toward the summit, whereas an uninsured climber panics at the first storm cloud and turns back immediately to avoid losing everything.
What the evidence says
26% of insured respondents reported that insurance awareness actively influenced them against abandoning crops (versus 7% who abandoned), and 26% reported that insurance encouraged them to plant earlier.
- Who was studied
- N = 743 insured smallholder farmers in Andhra Pradesh, India.
- How
- Post-monsoon qualitative survey evaluating behavioral shifts induced by weather index insurance coverage.
What to do
Issue parametric weather insurance prior to sowing windows to prevent panic-driven crop abandonment during early-season rainfall deficits.
From the source
"Farmers also report that their awareness of being insured also influenced them towards planting earlier, and against abandoning crops."
