Heterogeneous Financial Strain Moderation

Financial interventions do not affect all workers uniformly; productivity gains from liquidity relief are heavily moderated by baseline financial distress. Workers experiencing high baseline financial strain capture virtually all performance gains from liquidity infusions, whereas low-strain workers show no significant response.

Picture this

If two runners are in the rain, giving an umbrella to a dry runner does not change running speed. However, giving an umbrella to a soaking wet, shivering runner instantly restores the ability to run at full speed.

What the evidence says

Workers with above-average baseline financial strain produced 0.5 additional leaf plates per hour (compared to 0.27 plates per hour across the full sample) and exhibited an 18.6 percentage point increase in high attentiveness following early payment. Workers with lower baseline strain experienced no statistically significant change in productivity or attentiveness.

Who
408 human male wage laborers (aged 18–55) across 47 villages in Odisha, India.
How
Randomized Controlled Trial evaluating heterogeneous treatment effects based on a baseline financial strain index comprising land ownership, house quality, credit usage for daily goods, and cash emergency access.

What to do

Target early wage disbursements specifically toward employees exhibiting high baseline indicators of financial distress rather than applying blanket payment policies across all income tiers.

From the source

"This effect was concentrated among workers with above-average financial strain (as measured through an index including land ownership, house quality, use of credit for food and daily goods, and access to cash for emergencies), who produced 0.5 additional plates per hour. In contrast, relatively lower-strain workers experienced no significant change in productivity."
