Educational programs delivered to isolated individuals frequently suffer from decaying long-term impacts if immediate social circles do not support or discuss the new behaviors. Social norms within adolescent peer groups heavily govern health choices and behavioral adoption.

When an entire group of close friends receives the same training together, it operates like a shared language. Because everyone in the social circle undergoes the experience simultaneously, friends naturally talk about it, validate the concepts among themselves, and reinforce safer habits through peer expectations.
What the evidence says
Fully treated friendship networks produced a 0.46 standard deviation increase in knowledge (versus 0.28 SD for students with zero treated friends) and a 0.24 standard deviation increase in positive sexual attitudes (versus 0.04 SD for students with zero treated friends).
