Intergroup Contact Scalability Bottleneck

RCTReview

Intergroup contact interventions effectively reduce prejudice but are inherently difficult to scale because individuals overwhelmingly interact within their own identity groups. Policies relying solely on cross-group contact cannot easily reach broader populations.

Picture this

Imagine a town with two distinct neighborhoods that rarely interact. Trying to reduce conflict by arranging one-on-one dinners between members of both groups requires massive coordination and reaches very few people. Instead of trying to introduce everyone across town, encouraging members inside the majority neighborhood to talk among themselves spreads open-minded attitudes across the entire community much faster.

What the evidence says

Intragroup discussions among majority-group members achieved a 17 percentage point (42 percent) increase in hiring transgender workers without requiring direct contact between majority and minority individuals.

Who was studied
3,397 non-transgender individuals in urban Chennai, India.
How
Randomized evaluation evaluating whether intragroup communication among non-transgender individuals can bypass cross-group contact constraints to reduce hiring bias against a minority population of 0.5–1.25 million transgender individuals in India.

What to do

Implement peer communication programs strictly within majority networks when direct intergroup contact interventions face insurmountable demographic or logistical scaling barriers.

From the source

"The reach of such interventions is limited by a simple reality: people mostly interact with others from their own identity group. This makes scalable intergroup contact difficult."
