Piece-rate payment schemes incentivize speed and output volume, which causes workers to reduce production quality unless explicitly penalized. Managing the trade-off between output quantity and quality requires understanding how explicit quality monitoring impacts worker compensation demands and effort distribution.
Picture this
Imagine paying workers for every box of fruit packed. Workers will speed up to maximize earnings, but they may pack rotten fruit. If a supervisor introduces random spot-checks and forces workers to re-pack flawed boxes without extra compensation, workers slow down to inspect the fruit carefully, trading away packing speed to avoid unpaid re-work penalties.
What the evidence says
Quality monitoring decreases output quantity by 0.440 to 0.689 units per day (p < 0.01) while significantly improving quality by reducing sorting errors by 0.561 to 0.744 errors per unit (p < 0.01). Explicit quality monitoring does not increase worker reservation rates (WTA effect = -0.431 MWK, p > 0.10).
