N = 597 female micro-entrepreneurs categorized into Upper Caste Hindus (346), Scheduled Caste Hindus (70), and Muslims (181) in Ahmedabad, India.

Study Design

Comparative observational analysis of sub-caste institutional rules governing female contact with non-household men and public spaces.

Results

Ritual purity rules restricting contact with men significantly lower baseline business participation among Upper Caste Hindu women (27% business ownership) relative to lower-caste Scheduled Caste women (31% business ownership), despite identical average education levels (6.33 vs 6.62 years).

Takeaway

Structure micro-enterprise training to support home-based production and digital/remote sales channels when working with female entrepreneurs bound by ritual purity labor seclusion norms.
