Attitude Decay Divergence from Knowledge Retention
RCTClinical Trial
While factual health knowledge acquired during digital courses remains stable long after graduation, behavioral attitudes and beliefs tend to erode over time due to persistent external social pressures.
Picture this
Learning health facts is like saving a document on a hard drive—once stored, the information stays intact. Changing personal attitudes is more like setting a temperature dial in a cold room—over time, without ongoing heat, the mindset gradually drifts back toward the surrounding room temperature.
What the evidence says
Standardized attitude improvements decreased from 0.24 SD at 1 week post-course to 0.17 SD at 6 months post-course (p < 0.01), contrasting with factual knowledge gains which remained flat (0.37 SD to 0.38 SD).
- Who was studied
- N = 3,906 human ninth-grade public school students surveyed across 21 Colombian cities.
- How
- Longitudinal cluster RCT measuring standardized general attitude indices at 1 week post-intervention and 6 months post-intervention.
What to do
Implement periodic booster activities or peer discussions following main educational courses to sustain attitudinal shifts against post-intervention erosion.
