Participants

N = 122 municipal primary schools in Vadodara and 77 schools in Mumbai, India, alongside a national sample of primary school students.

Study Design

Cross-sectional diagnostic achievement survey measuring baseline competencies against prescribed grade-level curricula.

Results

Only 19.5% of Grade 3 children in Vadodara and 33.7% in Mumbai passed Grade 1 mathematics competencies; nationally across India, 44% of children aged 7-12 were unable to read a basic paragraph.

Takeaway

Re-align primary school teaching objectives and daily classroom instruction to match the actual diagnostic skill levels of students rather than adhering strictly to age-based official curricula.
